Performance artist, songwriter, classically trained harpist and circus sideshow veteran Baby Dee is an active member of Current 93 and Marc Almond's touring band.
She has collaborated with Antony & the Johnsons, and her 2008 release Safe Inside the Day features Will Oldham, Matt Sweeney, and Andrew
W.K. She recently received attention for her prominently-placed song
in the film "To Die Like a Man." Drag City will release Baby Dee's Book of Songs for Anne Marie in February 2010. John Contreras
(Current 93, etc.) and
fellow cellist Matthew Robinson will be joining Dee on the road; they
will perform as a trio.
"Transgender singer-songwriter Baby Dee has a rich, captivating, otherworldly voice. It soars majestically over mournful, sustained piano chords in 'Safe Inside the Day' before retreating and returning, boldly and forcefully... Baby Dee's resume includes stints as a harpist, a street musician and a sideshow performer, but it seems as if she'd be most comfortable in a world of her own creation, singing vaudeville. Bringing to mind Antony Hegarty of Anthony and the Johnsons, her voice is a force of nature, marked by dramatic outbursts and an unmistakable air of tragedy."
