Mike Doughty may well be best known as the former frontman of Soul Coughing, but he has come a long way since they broke up in 2000. He released an acclaimed solo album, Golden Delicious, in 2008, and will be touring behind a new CD, Sad Man Happy Man. He makes albums that simmer with verbal wit, and Sad Man Happy Man is no exception with its songs about everything from relationship bust-ups (Doughty was going through one while he was recording it) to his astute observations about the American economy.
Doughty's "Question Jar Show" offers fans a unique opportunity to interact with the musician. "We put a jar on the front of the stage, you put questions in it before we play, we answer 'em between songs," says Doughty. "Questions on any topic—obscure, weird, or esoteric questions—accepted happily." According to his Twitter feed, some recent questions include, "Have you ever considered a life as a Ghostbuster?" and "Would you rather play Twister with Dick Cheney or punch a kitten in the face?"
Doughty maintains a widely read blog that chronicles his unique shows, international travels, and creative endeavors. He's currently writing a memoir, recording an electronic album entitled Dubious Luxury, and working on a photo book about Eritrea's capital city of Asmara for Yeti Books.
Mike will be performing with cellist Andrew "Scrap" Livingston.
Opening the show is singer-songwriter Christina Courtin, whose self-titled debut album was released last year on Nonesuch Records. The New York Times said Courtin's voice "feels uniquely otherworldly, as if it couldn't possibly be entirely human born." Patrick McKiernan of Allgigs.co.uk wrote, "It's nothing short of immense how beautiful this girl's debut album is. It's up there with Joni Mitchell or anyone else for that matter." Courtin graduated from the Juilliard School, where she studied violin, and has collaborated with artists including Yo-Yo Ma and his Silk Road Ensemble, Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov, and soprano Dawn Upshaw. Listen to songs from the album here.
The Cooperage is a full service restaurant/nightclub specializing in steak & seafood, with a large salad bar, good desserts and a full bar.
